With its vast flora and fauna Northeast India is part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. The tribes and the local folk utilize many plants belonging to this region in their traditional medical practices. The active components of many of these plants are yet to be identified, studied and explored for wide acceptance of these plants in scientific fraternity. The region hosts many endemic flowering plant species having high ornamental value like the orchids, which have the great potential to be explored for cut-flower market and other purposes. The establishment of the GBP in Guwahati thus opens the door for people interested to explore the vast resources of Northeast India for economical and scientific benefit.
